Columbus Museum of Art at The Pizzuti — is a prominent center of contemporary art in Columbus, Ohio. Open to the public since September 2018 as part of the Columbus Museum of Art, the museum invites visitors to immerse themselves in the world of contemporary art from around the globe. Located in a three-story gallery on the border of the Short North and Victorian Village neighborhoods, near Goodale Park, this institution is a unique place to explore current artistic trends.
Before becoming part of the Columbus Museum of Art, the museum was known as Pizzuti Collection, which opened its doors to the public in 2013. Founded by the Pizzuti family, who amassed their wealth through the real estate company Pizzuti Companies, the museum began its art collection as early as 1977 after a trip to Paris. The family's first acquisition was the painting "Circus People" by Karel Appel, purchased at the Pace Gallery auction for $900.
The building now housing the museum was previously the headquarters of the Order of United Commercial Travelers of America from 1924 to 2008. After careful reconstruction carried out by the Pizzuti family, the museum opened to the public, showcasing its contemporary art collections.
The core of the museum’s exhibition consists of the Pizzuti family’s collection, which as of 2018 included approximately 2400 works of contemporary art. The gallery, covering 18,000 square feet (about 1,700 m²), offers visitors the chance to enjoy diverse exhibitions that change regularly, showcasing artists from around the world. By 2018, a total of 16 exhibitions had been held, featuring artists from 40 countries. At the same time, no more than 10% of the collection was exhibited at any given time, highlighting the diversity and vast potential of the collection.
The museum building, located in the historic Near Northside district, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its architectural value and unique style create an inviting atmosphere for visitors eager to experience contemporary art within a historic context.
Columbus Museum of Art at The Pizzuti not only preserves and showcases extraordinary works of art but also serves as a platform for cultural discussions and educational initiatives. We invite everyone to visit the museum and immerse themselves in the world of contemporary art that shapes our worldview today!
